Family Carers

Based on the scientific principles of sensory stimulation, our sensory DVD,
“A Sense of Calm,” uses gentle moving images, light and soothing music to stimulate calming alpha brain waves, helping to filter out stress, frustration, anxiety and agitation in those who have been diagnosed with conditions that can cause
such reactions.

Whether you are caring for a child with autism, or caring for an elderly relative with dementia, caring at home is a full time and demanding vocation. Caring for a
relative is not a lifestyle choice, rather something that has come about due to
circumstance, accident or misfortune, so it is something we do for the love of someone, who, through no fault of their own, cannot look after themselves without
our help.

A family carer must be constantly vigilant, willing to put another’s needs before their own and be able to soak up the stress and anxiety of those they care for, often with very little in the way of respite for themselves.

“A Sense of Calm” is available to professional and family carers alike to help
relieve stress, agitation and anxiety within the care environment, not only for the patient, but also for the carer.

The same sensory elements that allow “A Sense of Calm” to calm the mood of a patient with dementia, or a child with Autism, can work on anyone of us who are feeling frustrated, agitated and anxious as a result of everyday stresses and strains, which as a carer you are more susceptible to than most.

We have found that “A Sense of Calm” can help home carers by not only calming those they care for, but also by helping to relax carers themselves, often allowing them increased quality time with those they care for.

Please read our Home and General Relaxation Pages for more information on
“A Sense of Calm.”

"Thank you for letting me have a copy of your "A Sense Of Calm" DVD: it was very helpful.
My daughter has an unbalanced translocation of chromosomes, causing severe learning difficulties and early onset dementia, which leave her often confused and agitated. Your DVD proved very effective in calming her and giving her the opportunity to enjoy and engage with an involving and immersive visual stimulus. It helped her to relax and it helped me to take some of the stress out of her day. ”
Vicky Thompson-Carr Essex

"Initially we trialled the DVD in the Dementia wing, then progressed to the general Nursing wing.  As a result of the wonderful calming effect the DVD has, we decided to purchase a mobile sensory unit, promoting the use of the DVD throughout all the wings of the home."
- Annie Bairstow Matron RN RMN MW. Castle View Nursing Home, Peel.

"I recently gave this DVD to my father who had suffered from a stroke. A side effect of treatment medication was broken sleep and erratic tense spasm movements.”  “Not only does my father find the DVD relaxing at these times but my mother found it helps her. As a carer there is little time to relax and the DVD has given her a sense of calm when she has popped it on for short periods during the daytime.”
